The Simplon Pass at 2,005m is one of the most important crossings of the Pennine Alps, connecting Brig in Valais with Domodossola in Italy. Napoleon built the modern road in 1801–1805, and the sweeping, well-engineered route still impresses today. The hospice and eagle statue at the summit are iconic landmarks.
