The Great St. Bernard at 2,469m is one of the most historically significant alpine passes, used for over 3,000 years and home to the famous hospice where the Saint Bernard rescue dogs were bred. Napoleon crossed here with 40,000 troops in 1800. The summit lake and ancient hospice create an atmosphere of history.
