The St. Gotthard at 2,108m is one of the Alps' most historically important passes, connecting northern and southern Europe since Roman times. The old cobblestone road (Tremola) on the southern side is an engineering masterpiece — a serpentine cobbled route with 24 tight bends that dates from the 17th century.
